Meal Delivery Service: FlexPro Meals

FlexPro meals is a high quality ready prepared meal service which promotes ‘Nourish your body, Nurture your goals.’ They have significant variety in their food choices and you have full flexibility over the 35 meal options which are updated on an monthly basis. You can filter the options by Keto, Low Carb and High Protein and they will provide default meals based on this selection– or you can choose each meal individually on their website. All of the meals are available in either a regular or large size

FlexPro meals has the option of buying a single order but they provide almost 20% discount under the subscription model with a four week minimum commitment. They promise that the costs under the subscription model are guaranteed for life as well.

Delivery is fast– I got the first meal box two days after I placed my order. After that they deliver each week an a specific day (Monday for me) and you can make changes to your box 5 days before delivery. They deliver to all 50 US states with a flat delivery charge of $9.99 except for Alaska and Hawaii which costs $25. The minimum number of entrées they ship is 7, the maximum is 21. They have a few breakfast looking options but they are not distinguishable from other entrees. They also have ‘Power Treats’ with boxes of 4-6 servings of things like birthday cake or monster ‘cookie dough’. These cost $10 a box. You are required to select at least one of these power treat items each week if you sign up for the subscription model. It is relatively easy to skip a week of meals and you can skip up to 2 weeks in advance. To cancel a subscription you need to call them or chat with them during business hours.

A nice element with FlexPro meals is the option to purchase meal prep boxes which contain basic elements of meal prep: proteins, carbs and veggies. This is a nice option if you want more basic fare or really want to target your macros very specifically. You have to spend a minimum of $85 on these items and costs range $2 for a serving of vegetables to $7 for a serving of sirloin steak.

Like most ready-made meal companies, there is an initial discount on sign-up which can be as much as 60% off (Black Friday sale). After that, under the subscription model it costs $6.99 per regular entrée and $8.49 for the large size, plus applicable taxes and shipping.

To provide a meaningful comparison between the different plans (and other meal services) I look at four key objective factors that help me meet my health goals in the most cost effective way possible: 1) cost per 100 grams of protein, 2) calories per 100 grams of protein, 3) average serving size (grams), and 4) cost per 10 grams of fiber. For FlexPro the calculated figures based on nutrition labels I ordered are presented in the table below.

Cost/100g ProteinCalories/100g ProteinServing Size(g)Cost/10g Fiber
Regular$25.871104250*$15.84
Large$19.37981350$13.35

FlexPro has enough variety that you could use it either in a build or cut mode. You could easily work the macros to be able to eat three of their meals per day, and then supplement with a lean protein or protein shake to be in a calorie deficit, or they have some entrees which have a higher caloric content for a build mode. They also have some incredibly good fiber options with one meal having an amazing 28 grams of fiber in a single serving. In verifying the caloric counts of each meal– the stated calories on the nutrition labels do seem to fully discount the fiber content.

We chose 21 entrees off of the Large menu that had less than 500 calories a piece (except for the burrito grande which has an amazing amount of protein and fiber). The meals come in packaging that are made to be microwaved and arrived slightly frozen– not sure if that is by design or it was really cold those days. A lot of flavor and pretty tasty with the sauces– might be slightly overpowering if you are usede to a meal prep diet of bland chicken and rice. The meals are not large but surprisingly filling. The meats retained much of their form and there was nothing that was ‘ground’ up so it felt slightly less processed.

The largest positive for FlexPro is the overall cost both in terms of getting sufficient protein for a reasonable cost as well as keeping calories in check for high protein meals. The fiber content on most dishes is a bit low — but a few of these had an unbelievable amount of fiber. There is a lot of sauce on some of the meals, and I found myself pushing some of that aside. The ‘Power Treats’ are nice as a sweet snack– definitely preferred the ‘cookie dough’ options as the cake tasted a little too processed.
